To the crafty people on my flist!

I have a cunning plan to crochet a handbag and I have a clear idea of what I want the yarn to look like. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty working out what yarn to actually buy for it.
Ideally, I would like the yarn to be shiny and to look like a single strand, not multiple threads, basically like elastic hair bands. I want it to be about double knit thickness or slightly thinner. The closest I could find in my local yarn store was either silk or mercerised cotton or embroidery silks, but they are not quite right.
I think artificial fibres would best for this but I'm not sure which one. I want something reasonably hard wearing, not too expensive and most importantly SHINY!
Any recommendations for a fibre or a specific yarn?
I tried posting on a crochet community but didn't get much joy.
